Necropoli

Necropoli - I

Necropoli are an Italian Doom band, with a little help from Ennui vocalist David Unsaved, who hails from Georgia, and this is their debut offering.

I is a bit of a beast. It has 5 tracks, 4 of which are of epic proportions, with the 17 minute Silence Awaits Me being the longest. The odd one out is the final track, Curriculum Vitae, which is 4 minutes of atmospheric droning.

I think it's because of the length of the songs that someone has decided to tag this as Funeral Doom, but it's a bit too pacey for that. Sure, at times, it's as slow as a snail on mogadon's, but quite often it threatens to liven up and feels more like Atmospheric Progressive Death, if there is such a genre.

But for your money, you get a bit of misery, growled vocals, once again, of the miserable variety and the feeling of grandeur. Majestic Death/Doom mixed in with more atmospheric tones. Think Icon era Paradise Lost, but slowed down, making babies with early My Dying Bride.

I is a superbly put together debut, but it is an album that I need to be in the mood for. But with autumn setting in, it's the perfect backdrop for this forlorn, but likeable outing.
